“I was literally trying to make the government save money, get better contracts, and get better care for veterans,” Kelt explained. However, her hope was short-lived. On February 13th, she was among 2,400 probationary VA employees who received notices stating that their employment was “no longer in the public interest.”
“It’s an abject betrayal,” Kelt stated, expressing her disappointment and anger. “I told the military, ‘I will give you my body, I will sacrifice my health to protect you,’ and they aren’t willing to do the bare minimum to just respect me for that sacrifice.” She emphasized the hardship caused by losing her income while still dealing with pain and disability, especially from an organization that is supposed to care for her.
Potential for Mass Layoffs at the VA?
